After a 5-year transformation, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute's Bird House reopens as the first zoo exhibition of its size to highlight the annual journeys of migratory songbirds, waterfowl, and shorebirds integral to North, Central, and South American ecosystems. This immersive exhibition, and the surrounding plateau, features three walk-through aviaries and more than 100 species of birds and it highlights how visitors can “live bird friendly” by making lifestyle choices that are best for birds, humans and, the planet.

On Wednesday, February 22nd, from 1-2:30 pm, DCSWA members can come to the Zoo to:
  • Interview experts on migratory bird husbandry, care, and conservation.
  • Walk through immersive aviaries that mimic natural ecosystems as birds stride, paddle, tweet, and fly around the shores of the Delaware Bay, a lush prairie pothole, and a tropical bird-friendly coffee farm.
  • Learn about and sample Smithsonian Bird Friendly® certified coffee and chocolate that helps preserve critical habitats, protect biodiversity, fight climate change, and support growers committed to farming sustainably.
Note: There will be other journalists circulating at the same time. Experts will be stationed around the birdhouse but there will be no formal remarks. Everyone is welcome to explore at their leisure.
